In this installment of Organizing Life’s Daily Demands, Peter engages in a conversation with Sheila Warnock from Share The Care. Share The Care is a caregiving approach that provides guidance to caregivers on how to establish a collective effort in caring for individuals who are either seriously ill or in need of other forms of support. This model does not focus on medical matters, but rather aims to assist individuals facing various crises by offering them a genuine support system, thereby preventing feelings of isolation and depression.
In the 1980s, Sheila began her caregiving journey when there were limited resources available for caregivers. At that time, caregiving organizations were just starting to emerge, and Sheila found herself being the sole caregiver for her mother while also discovering that her friend Susan had cancer. Despite the challenges worsening over the years, Sheila persevered and tried not to dwell on them. However, upon receiving advice from a nurse’s aide, she made the difficult decision to resign from her caregiving role after four years and transition her mother to a nursing home for more suitable care. Subsequently, Sheila and Susan’s other friends were summoned for a meeting.
Susan, after being persuaded by her doctor, informed her remaining friends about her cancer diagnosis and her need for assistance. Together, they made the decision to collaborate and find a solution. They successfully established an effective system that lasted for a considerable period of time. Unfortunately, Susan passed away four years later. However, Sheila encountered more individuals who required support and relief in their caregiving journey. It was during this time that Sheila took the initiative to establish the Share The Care program.
Caregiving requires experience, just like any other profession, and it is not something that everyone is familiar with. However, it can be challenging for individuals to gain this experience on their own, especially when they already have other responsibilities such as a job or a family. In such situations, it becomes crucial to have a support system of friends or family members who can lend a helping hand. This is where Share The Care plays a significant role.
Share The Care is a non-profit organization committed to supporting caregivers and individuals facing serious illnesses. Their primary objective is to provide a comprehensive guidebook, essential tools, and educational resources to help alleviate the challenges of caregiving, including stress, depression, isolation, and financial difficulties. They operate through organized groups and maintain personal communication with caregivers.
Be safe, work together and figure out how to share the care.
Thank you for your time and for watching,
Peter
